Elgin Community College events

Elgin Community College begins celebration of Latino Heritage Month with a kickoff breakfast at 8 a.m. Friday, Sept. 12 in the Fox Valley University and Business Center dining room.

Keynote speaker Maggie Rivas-Rodriguez, a journalism professor at the University of Texas in Austin, will discuss "Latinos in the Military." Rivas-Rodriguez is the organizer of the U.S. Latino and Latina World War II Oral History Project and has collected interviews with more than 650 men and women Latino war veterans throughout the country.

National Latino AIDS Awareness Day: The ECC Organization of Latin American Students takes part in this national event to raise visibility of the AIDS crisis in the Latino community. OLAS is distributing information about the disease and a speaker is scheduled to speak. Event will be held from 11 a.m. to noon Monday, Sept. 15 at Student Resource Center Jobe Lounge. Admission is free.

Sabor Latino: Spend the lunch hour at ECC and experience the cuisine and music from a different Latino country each week. Event will be held Wednesdays, Sept. 17, 24 and Oct. 1 at the ECC Cafeteria. Cost varies.

Majority Minority events

• Latino-based charities: Sponsored by OLAS, this presentation focuses on the positive influence of Latino-based charities on the United States. Program begins at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 22 in the SRC Jobe Lounge. Admission is free.

• Latino food: Sponsored by OLAS, this presentation focuses on the positive influence of Latino food into the American culture. Program is at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23 at SRC Jobe Lounge. Admission is free.

• Latino students: Sponsored by OLAS, this event explores the rise of Latino students achieving their college dreams.

Event will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 25 at SRC Jobe Lounge. Admission is free.

Latino Film Festival

• "Bordertown" Inspired by the true story of the hundreds of women murdered in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, this film tells the story of an inquisitive American reporter sent by her newspaper to investigate the murders. Free popcorn will be served during the showing. The event begins at 7 p. m. Friday, Sept. 19 at the Advanced Technology Center Auditorium. Admission is free.

• "Love in the Time of Cholera" chronicles a 50-year love triangle between a woman and her two suitors. Free popcorn is served during the showing which begins at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26 at Advanced Technology Center Auditorium. Admission is free.

Aztec Stories: Join artist Michael Heralda for a presentation on the world of the Aztecs that involves a mix of ancient poetry, narratives, oral tradition stories and ballads. Presentation begins at noon Wednesday, Sept. 24 at SRC Jobe Lounge. Admission is free.

Sixth annual ECC Latino Read-In Chain: This annual ECC event celebrates Latino Heritage Month and the rich Latino literacy tradition. The public is welcome to come read the works of their favorite Latino writers. Event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30 in the ECC Library. Admission is free.

Latino Healthcare Awareness: Members of OLAS distribute information on health issues relevant to the Latino community Tuesday, Sept. 30 to Thursday Oct. 2 in the SRC hallways. There is no charge.

ECC's Got Talent: Come on over and see a possible star. Based on the popular TV show, the winner walks off with a $500 grand prize. Contest will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3 in the ATC Auditorium. Admission is free.
