Even with hardship, life is worth living

On Sept. 29, Mary Beth Delaney pointed out the many reasons for her pro-life position.

She points out things that would make for a better life such as good health care, warmth, a good diet, employment, education, an end to violence and war, a healthy environment, conservation and good senior care.

Mary Beth concludes with a statement of support for the presidential candidate who voted four times against a bill to provide health care, warmth, a good diet, a chance to get an education, to be free of violence, enjoy the environment or receive good senior care; against a bill assuring these things to a baby surviving an abortion.

This statement of support for Barack Obama comes immediately after her reassertion of her pro-life position and her opinion: "Being pro-life means more than making sure all babies conceived are born."

The implication is that life without the assurance of certain comforts is a life not worth living.

The implication is that her candidate can somehow better provide the assurance of those comforts and that after those things are attained, the conceived baby should be allowed birth.

This argument brings to mind the conditions preceding the birth of Abraham Lincoln and the world he was born into.

Lincoln was born in a place where warmth, good diet, employment, and education were scarce, yet he thrived, prospered and went on to become one of our nation's heroes.

One might argue that Lincoln may have been unable to cope with the hardships of his presidency without the forging provided by his childhood condition.

We should strive constantly to bring about the good Ms. Delaney lists in her pro-life assertions without making any preconditions on the Creator for the acceptance of his gifts.
