Scavenger hunt and craft: Through Sept. 19, Ela Area Public Library, 275 Mohawk Trail, Lake Zurich. Celebrate International Talk Like a Pirate Day with a weeklong scavenger hunt. Checkmates Chess Club: 4-5 p.m. Sept. 16, 23 and 30, Ela Area Public Library, 275 Mohawk Trail, Lake Zurich. Three weeks of instruction are followed by a tournament with prizes. "Animals Are Sleeping": Book signing at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16; Adler School, Libertyville. Author Suzanne Slade signs copies of her latest book about how animals sleep.

Scoop Night: 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, Maggie Moo's, 3022 W. Route 60, Mundelein. The teachers of Mundelein Cooperative Preschool will scoop Maggie Moo treats. All proceeds made the entire day go to Mundelein Cooperative Preschool.
