Buffalo Grove police warn residents of burglaries

Buffalo Grove police are warning residents about a rash of residential burglaries.

The break-ins have been occurring during the afternoon and evening hours when residents aren't home.

Police said there were five similar incidents last year over the summer months, and that number has doubled for the same period - June, July and August - of this year.

Buffalo Grove Cmdr. Steve Husak said the majority of the burglaries have been in the Lake County portion of town; however one happened south of Lake-Cook Road in the Cook County section.

"They've all been very similar," he said. "Mostly, sliding glass doors are forced open. They only take jewelry and some money."

He said larger items, such as laptops and TVs, have been left behind.

While most of the incidents involve back doors and windows, some residents have reported the burglars coming in through the front door, Husak said.

"We want people to keep an eye out," he said. "If people knock on their front doors that they don't know, let us know."

Husak said no alarms have been activated in any of the break-ins.

"No one's ever been home," he said.

The police have increased marked and unmarked patrols of residential areas, and Husak said police are also working with the public works department to keep an eye on neighborhoods.

He said police are checking with neighboring towns to see if similar crimes have been committed there.

Anyone who sees any unusual noises or suspicious behavior should call 911 or the police at (847) 459-2560.
