Loyola 2, Libertyville 1: Libertyville took the soccer field Saturday trying to a earn a berth in the championship game of the Pepsi Showdown at Toyota Park.
The Wildcats didn't have one of their best efforts, however.
Libertyville, fourth-seeded in the tourney, lost a 2-1 a decision to No. 8 Loyola Academy in the semifinals at the Lyons Soccer complex in LaGrange.
Loyola (6-2, 4-0), which got by top-seeded Schaumburg on Thursday, will next play in the championship game against No. 2 Larkin (8-0, 4-0) on Sunday, October 5 at 10 a.m. at Toyota Park.
"We played every team very well and deserved to win every game," Loyola Academy coach Rob Etheridge said.
"No team has really pushed us. (Libertyville) pushed us physically and technically a bit.
"Getting the first two goals was crucial, but they really didn't have a shot on goal in the first half. We had a lot more opportunities and got the goals."
Libertyville (5-1-1, 3-1) has gotten off to a great start, but the Wildcats weren't on their game against Loyola.
"We were just flat," Libertyville coach Andy Bitta said. "Offensively, we were flat and we didn't test (Loyola goalkeeper Neal Manahan) and we didn't do anything like we did in other games. We just didn't play our game.
"Give credit to Loyola. They played well and took away our short passing game in the midfield and we didn't adjust quick enough. (Loyola) stood up to our run at the end. It's a learning experience for us."
Loyola scored late in the first half, when Spencer Remick hit a rocket kick into the lower corner for a 1-0 lead.
Thomas Benton made it 2-0 in the 43rd minute. The goal was set up on a Ramblers counter attack as Dylan Remick assisted.
Libertyville's Brad Novak scored on a penalty kick in the 47th minute.
The Wildcats applied good pressure in the final 15 minutes.
"I couldn't find an opportunity to get a shot off," Novak said.
"I got stuffed a few times. They seemed to fill in with a few guys in back."
