Bill to allow widow to stay in U.S. advances
WASHINGTON -- The U.S. House has advanced a special measure to allow an illegal immigrant who cared for her paralyzed husband for 14 years before his death to stay in the country.
The private bill was introduced by Chicago-areas Congressman Dan Lipinski. It was approved without controversy on a voice vote Tuesday for the special benefit of Corina Turcinovic.
She met her husband after she came to the U.S. on a visa waiver from France.
Turcinovic was released from Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody earlier this year.
Few private bills become law, but Lipinski calls this one a simple case of justice.
It must pass the Senate and be signed by the president to become law.
