Cops probe downstate post office break-in

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. -- Police in East St. Louis were investigating a a break-in at a post office building there.

Detective Ricky Perry says East St. Louis Police responded to a call of a possible burglary in progress early Sunday morning and discovered that a window on the south side of the building had been broken and the rear door of the building was open.

Perry says electrical lines and telephone wires were cut, and the building had been ransacked, but officers were not immediately able to determine what, if anything, had been taken.

East St. Louis Police Chief Michael Baxton says postal inspectors also are involved in the investigation.
