Man charged with firing gun during chase

A 30-year-old Palatine man faces felony charges of reckless discharge of a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon for allegedly firing a handgun several times at his apartment complex early Sunday morning, police said.

At 3:54 a.m., Juan C. Guajardo, of 440 W. Palatine Road, Apt. 4, chased another man around the courtyard of one of the apartment buildings and fired three or four shots, police said.

Authorities arrived and found the victim uninjured. Witnesses believed Guajardo was still armed and in an apartment with a woman and young child. When the occupants refused to come out or speak, police secured a perimeter and requested assistance from the Emergency Services Team of the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System.

Police then learned Guajardo might be in a second apartment. Both were searched and Guajardo was found in the second residence. The woman and child were safely removed from the first unit, along with the gun and ammunition.

Guajardo has also been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition without a Firearm Owner's Identification Card.
