Holy Name Cathedral reopens for weekend masses

The spiritual home for Chicago Catholics is again open for prayer and sanctuary. Mass was held Saturday at Holy Name Cathedral for the first time since February 26th, when the 133-year-old building was closed for repairs.

Engineers determined that structural weaknesses in the roof had caused a 10-pound piece of decorative wood to fall 70 feet from the ceiling. No one was injured in the incident.

The church will be open for weekend masses and weddings. Workmen will continue repairs during the week, when it will be closed to the public. Archdiocesean officials say they are unsure when those repairs will be complete.
