The Hispanic Heritage Coalition of Elgin was incorporated in 2000. The mission of the coalition is to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month and promote the education of young Latinos. HHC produces two major events, the Miss Hispanidad Scholarship program, and Fiesta Salsa. It is also looking to offer a scholarship to young men, in the near future.
Miss Hispanidad started in 1999 as a small competition that highlighted the intelligence and beauty of young Latina women. It was not until the next year that the scholarship element was added to the program. Currently, Miss Hispanidad contestants have the opportunity to win a first prize of $5,000 toward their higher education. With a total of $10,000 in prizes, the scholarship program is one of the largest in the area.
Fiesta Salsa was also started in 1999. Fiesta Salsa has grown dramatically into one of the largest outside festivals in the entire Fox Valley area. Attendance of the one day event has grown from numbers such as 2,500 to 10,000 people throughout the day. As popularity of the event grows, those numbers are anticipated to continually grow as well.
The mission for Fiesta Salsa is to promote harmony within the various Latino and Non-Latino Cultures and celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month. Entrance to the festival has always been free of charge and has been made possible by the tremendous support of local area sponsors.
