Theriot back in lineup

ST. LOUIS - The Cubs got mostly good news on their multiple injury fronts Tuesday.

Shortstop Ryan Theriot was a last-minute addition to the starting lineup. Theriot came out of Sunday's game early because of lightheadedness. Manager Lou Piniella said Theriot was dehydrated and had to have a "couple IVs."

Theriot saw a doctor Tuesday and took full batting practice before assuring the Cubs he was OK.

The story is different for reliever Chad Gaudin. The Cubs sent Gaudin to their spring-training facility in Arizona to work out. On Monday, Gaudin was examined by Dr. Michael Schafer. The Cubs said Gaudin had no structural damage but continued to have "sensory nerve complaints that do not allow him to repeat his delivery."

Piniella described it as a "tingling" in the buttocks area. Gaudin has been cleared to work out to as much as he can tolerate.

Pitcher Carlos Zambrano pitched on the outfield grass Tuesday afternoon. Rich Harden had a session of throwing Monday.

"Zambrano had a good throw day," Piniella said. "So he's on track for Saturday (at Houston). Harden had a good throw day yesterday, and he's on track for Thursday. I think we get our two starting pitchers back into the rotation, I think it will help stabilize things, too."

Fukudome sits again: Kosuke Fukudome did not start Tuesday night, making three straight games he has begun the game on the bench. Fukudome has started just once in the last six games.

"Soon," Lou Piniella responded when asked when Fukudome would start again. "I thought about playing him tonight and said give him one more day. We'll get him back in there in this series."

Fukudome has struggled since midseason, and he entered Tuesday batting .262. Piniella didn't seem to think more work would do him any good.

"We're just giving him time off to relax a little bit more than anything else," Piniella said. "At the end of the year, if you need extra hitting in September, it's not going to do you any good. You hear about 'all work.' I don't think it works. I think you need to relax. You need to have confidence in yourself, and you need to have fun in what you're doing."

This and that: The Cubs placed pitcher Jon Lieber (foot injury) on the 60-day disabled list. ... The club is monitoring Hurricane Ike, which is headed westward in the Gulf of Mexico. The Cubs open a series at Houston on Friday.
