Des Plaines asks for evacuations

Des Plaines officials are recommending residents living near the Des Plaines River evacuate their homes as part of the declaration of a local state of emergency.

According to a news release issued Sunday afternoon, the city is recommending a voluntary evacuation due to river level predictions. The city cannot guarantee the safety of residents should they remain in their residences. The following areas should be evacuated due to the high probability of flooding:

• The area bounded by River Road, Touhy Ave., Maple St., and Oakton Street.

• Area bounded by Miner, River Rd., Oakton and White St. including everything east of River Rd. (Stewart Av., Shagbark Ln., River Dr. and Berry Ln.)

• Campbell Av. at River Rd.

• Methodist Campground

• Area east of I-294 from Golf Rd. to Dempster St. to Potter Rd.

• Big Bend Drive east of River Rd. including Junior Terrace, Sherwood Rd., Hawthorne Ln. and Hawthorne Ter.

A shelter has been established at Prairie Lakes Community Center, 515 E. Thacker Street, Des Plaines.

The city of Des Plaines has placed sand and sandbags at the following locations:

• Rand Rd. and Elk Blvd.

• Ballard Rd. & Potter Rd.

• Bellaire & Ballard Rd.

• Mill St. (at the dead end)

• River Dr. (south of Stewart Ave.)

• Howard Ave. (west of River Rd.)

• Grove Ave. & Woodland Ave.

• Dead end of Shagbark Dr.

• Christ Church (Cora & Henry Ave.)

• Bennett Place & Locust Street

• Berry Ln.

• arding Ave. & Graceland Ave.

• Algonquin Rd. & Wolf Rd.

• Marshall Dr. & Cordial Dr.

• Dursey Ln. & Callen Ln.

• Busse Hwy. & Mason Ln.

• Chase Ave. & Magnolia St.

The following roads are currently closed (as of Noon):

• River Rd. from Touhy Ave. to Kensington Rd.

• Rand Rd. from Ballard Rd. to River Rd.

• Golf Rd. between River Rd. and East River Rd.

• Central Rd. from River Rd. to East River Rd.

• Dempster St. from Potter Rd. to Rand Rd.

• Thacker St. from Cora St. to River Rd.

• Algonquin Rd., eastbound at White St.

• Rand Rd., between Graceland Ave. and Golf Rd.

• Rand Rd. at Ballard Rd.

• Oakton St. between River Rd. and Sycamore St.
