Twins stay 2½ back

Tigers 7, Twins 5

MINNEAPOLIS -- Miguel Cabrera, Magglio Ordonez and Dusty Ryan homered to help Detroit get the win.

Ryan, a rookie catcher, hit a two-run homer in his first major league start. Chris Lambert (1-1) earned his first career win and the Tigers won consecutive games for the first time since Aug. 22-23.

Bobby Seay pitched two innings of relief, Kyle Farnsworth pitched a scoreless eighth and Fernando Rodney got three outs for his 10th save in 14 opportunities.

Justin Morneau had four RBIs, including a two-run triple, for Minnesota, which remains 2½ games behind AL Central-leading Chicago.

Cabrera's leadoff homer in the sixth was his 1,000th career hit.

Glen Perkins (12-4) allowed three earned runs and nine hits in 5 2-3 innings for the Twins.

Red Sox 7, Rangers 2

ARLINGTON, Texas -- David Ortiz hit his first home run in 20 games, Paul Byrd pitched 6 2-3 scoreless innings to win his fourth straight decision and Boston moved within 1½ games of the AL East lead.

The Red Sox (84-58) are the closest they've been to division-leading Tampa Bay since July 28. Six of their next nine games are against the skidding Rays, starting Monday night at Fenway Park.

Byrd (11-11) is 4-1 in five starts since the Red Sox acquired him from Cleveland on Aug. 12. The right-hander has won eight of nine overall since a five-game losing streak before the All-Star break.

Ortiz had last homered Aug. 14 and the 19-game homerless streak matched the longest in his six seasons with Boston. His 415-foot, two-run shot in the fifth off Brandon McCarthy (1-1) put Boston up 4-0.

Blue Jays 1, Rays 0

TORONTO -- David Purcey struck out seven in eight innings to help the Blue Jays extend their winning streak to eight games.

Jesse Carlson finished the six-hitter for his second save and Toronto matched its longest winning streak since Apr. 14-22, 1999.

AL East-leading Tampa Bay lost for the fifth time in six games.

Rod Barajas hit a second-inning sacrifice fly for Toronto, which pulled within 9½ games of the Rays.

Tampa Bay's Matt Garza (11-9) allowed one run and six hits in seven innings. He struck out seven and walked one.

Purcey (3-5) allowed six hits and walked three.

Mariners 5, Yankees 2

SEATTLE -- Jose Lopez hit two homers and the Mariners sent the Yankees tumbling into fourth place in the AL East.

Lopez's liner just over the wall in left field off Mike Mussina (17-8) gave Seattle a 3-2 lead in the fourth.

Mussina allowed four runs and seven hits and made a key error -- his first in three years -- in six innings.

Lopez added his 14th homer in the eighth off Jose Veras. It was Lopez's first multihomer game.

The Yankees trail the Red Sox by 8ˆ½ games in the AL wild-card standings with 19 games remaining. They also fell behind Toronto in the division.

Ryan Feierabend (1-2) allowed just five hits -- including solo home runs by Derek Jeter and Xavier Nady early -- in seven innings for his second win in 11 career decisions.

Miguel Batista pitched a perfect eighth and J.J. Putz got three outs for his 12th save in 20 chances.

Indians 3, Royals 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Cliff Lee won his 10th straight decision for Cleveland, the longest winning streak in the majors this season.

Lee, who leads the majors with 21 wins, is 10-0 in 11 starts since a July 6 loss at Minnesota. In those 11 starts, Lee has a 1.84 ERA. He lowered his major league-leading ERA to 2.28.

Lee (21-2) held the Royals to one run and seven hits -- six of them singles -- in 7 1-3 innings. Jensen Lewis got three outs for his eighth save.

Victor Martinez drove in all three Indians runs.

Zack Greinke (10-10) allowed three runs and five hits in six innings for Kansas City.

National League

Mets 6, Phillies 3

NEW YORK -- Carlos Delgado hit two long homers and drove in four runs, backing a big win by Johan Santana as the New York Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-3 on Sunday night for a doubleheader split.

The NL East leaders salvaged the finale of the three-game series, giving them a two-game edge over second-place Philadelphia.

In the opener, Jamie Moyer (13-7) allowed only two soft singles in seven shutout innings and Greg Dobbs hit a three-run homer off Pedro Martinez.

Pedro Martinez (5-4) took the loss in Game 1, the makeup of Saturday's rainout.

In the nightcap, Santana (13-7), gave up two runs and five hits in 7 1-3 innings.

Cole Hamels (12-9) hung an 0-2 breaking ball to Delgado leading off the third and he jumped on it, hitting a drive estimated at 400 feet off the bottom of the right-field scoreboard.

Padres 10, Brewers 1

MILWAUKEE -- Chris Young came within four outs of a perfect game, retiring the first 23 Milwaukee batters in order before Gabe Kapler homered, and San Diego beat the Brewers.

Young (5-5) got Prince Fielder and Corey Hart to pop out in the eighth before Kapler hit Young's 76th pitch of the game -- a 1-0 fastball -- into the left-field bleachers.

Chase Headley hit his ninth homer and Kevin Kouzmanoff hit his 21st for San Diego, which had 14 hits and broke the game open with five unearned runs off Manny Parra (10-7) in the third.

If Young had succeeded, it would have been the 18th perfect game in MLB history, and first since Arizona's Randy Johnson accomplished the feat on May 18, 2004 with a 2-0 victory over the Braves.

Dodgers 5, Diamondbacks 3

LOS ANGELES -- James Loney had three RBIs and the Dodgers completed a three-game sweep of Arizona that gave them a 1½-game lead on the Diamondbacks in the NL West.

The Dodgers tied a season best with their eighth straight win, following an eight-game skid. Hong Chih-Kuo (5-2) pitched 1 1-3 innings of relief for the victory and Jonathan Broxton got four outs for his 13th save.

The Diamondbacks have lost six of eight. On Aug. 29, they held a 4ˆ½-game lead on Los Angeles.

With the score tied at 3, Blake DeWitt greeted reliever Jon Rauch (4-6) with a ground-rule double to lead off the seventh. DeWitt took third when first baseman Adam Dunn misplayed Angel Berroa's sacrifice bunt for an error.

Garciaparra drove in DeWitt with a sacrifice fly to right. Berroa scored when shortstop Stephen Drew booted Andre Ethier's routine grounder and threw too late to get him at first base.

Cardinals 3, Mariners 1

ST. LOUIS -- Albert Pujols hit a two-run home run and Adam Wainwright worked eight stingy innings in the Cardinals' victory over Florida.

Aaron Miles tripled and scored on pinch hitter Josh Phelps' single in the seventh for an insurance run, helping the Cardinals take two of three for their first series win since Aug. 22-24, when they took two of three from the Braves. St. Louis has won only three of its last nine.

Pujols hammered a 2-2 pitch from Josh Johnson (4-1) over the wall in left-center for a 2-0 lead.

Mike Jacobs hit his 30th homer leading off the second, his second of the series after homering for the first time in 70 career at-bats against the Cardinals on Friday.

Wainwright (9-3) allowed six hits and struck out six, with one walk, to beat the Marlins for the first time in four career appearances, including two starts.

Astros 7, Rockies 5

DENVER -- Pinch-hitters Darin Erstad and David Newhan had back-to-back run-scoring hits in the eighth inning, lifting Houston over Colorado.

The Astros have won 10 of 11 to pull within six games of NL wild card-leading Milwaukee, which lost 10-1 loss to San Diego on Sunday.

Erstad's bloop single tied it, and Newhan followed with a triple to center off Taylor Buchholz (6-5) to give Houston a 6-5 lead. Jose Castillo added a run-scoring single in the ninth and went 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

The Rockies, the defending NL champions, lost for the third time in four games. They entered the day 5½ games back of NL West-leading Los Angeles.

Doug Brocail (7-5) tossed a scoreless seventh inning to earn the win in his 600th career appearance.

Nationals 7, Braves 4, 14 innings

ATLANTA -- Elijah Dukes hit a three-run double in the 14th inning and Washington beat Atlanta.

Dukes, who homered twice and went 4-for-5 in Saturday's 10-inning victory, was hitless in six at-bats before he faced Jeff Bennett in the 14th.

Bennett (2-6) gave up a leadoff walk to Anderson Hernandez, an infield single to Willie Harris and a one-out intentional walk to Lastings Milledge before Dukes doubled down the third-base line.

Steven Shell (2-1) pitched the 12th and 13th innings, striking out two and giving up two hits.

Joel Hanrahan got two quick outs before pinch-hitter James Parr, a rookie pitcher, walked and moved to third on Yunel Escobar's double. Hanrahan retired Jeff Francoeur on a grounder to earn his eighth save in 11 chances.

Giants 11, Pirates 6

SAN FRANCISCO -- Pablo Sandoval finished with five RBIs and the Giants rode a 10-run inning to a win over Pittsburgh, assuring the Pirates their record-tying 16th consecutive losing season.

San Francisco rapped out nine hits in its big fourth inning and took advantage of two errors to push across its most runs in a frame since it scored 10 in the second inning against the Houston Astros on Sept. 23, 2003.

Jeff Karstens (2-5) had his 18-inning road scoreless streak come to an emphatic end as he lost his fifth straight decision. He pitched three-plus innings, and was charged with five earned runs and six hits.

Jonathan Sanchez lasted three innings for the Giants. He gave up three runs, two earned, and five hits.

Osiris Matos (1-2) allowed two runs in the fourth, but earned his first major league victory.
