Promoter of safe driving for teens killed
WINCHESTER -- Nurse Janet Kelley was known for her efforts to promote safe driving.
As part of her efforts, Kelley gave presentations to high school students about what she'd seen in the emergency room over the years.
The 56-year-old Kelley was driving along Interstate 72 in Scott County on Tuesday when she was killed in a single vehicle crash.
Police said Kelley steered her sports utility vehicle from the right lane into the left lane to allow traffic to merge from the Winchester on-ramp. She drove onto the north shoulder of the highway, overcorrected and lost control.
The SUV overturned onto the driver's side and burst into flames.
Kelley was described by fellow nurse Mary Kay Reed of Southern Illinois University School of Medicine as a person with a big heart who loved kids and devoted herself to keeping them safe.
