Police hope arrests halt Metra lot break-ins

Elgin police hope three arrests made early Wednesday morning bring an end a recent rash of vehicle burglaries in the Big Timber Metra Station parking lot.

Police were called to the lot about 12:11 a.m. Wednesday after witnesses saw a juvenile using the flat head of a screwdriver to break vehicle windows.

Responding officers caught and arrested three suspects after a brief foot chase.

Jorge L. Avila, 22, of 1616 Mark Ave., Elgin, Jose Espinoza, 18, of 755 Wing St., Elgin and a juvenile were charged with four counts of burglary and four counts of criminal damage to property, police said.

Windows were broken on a 2007 Jeep, a 2008 Toyota, a 2005 Honda and a 2004 Buick. Police did not disclose what items were taken from the vehicles.

Avila, who also was wanted on warrants for unlawful use of a weapon and driving while license suspended, remained in custody at the Kane County jail Thursday, unable to post a $5,000 bond.

Espinoza was free after posting a $1,000 bond. Both men are scheduled to appear in court Sept. 12.

The juvenile was taken to the Kane County Juvenile Center in St. Charles.
