Get your fill of Irish music, food and dance
If your heart isn't doing a jig for the end of summer, maybe the Irish can help.
The 13th annual Fox Valley Irish Fest begins at 5 p.m. Friday at St. Catherine of Siena Church in West Dundee.
Back and bigger than ever, you won't need luck to find a good time.
"This is St. Catherine's biggest event of the year," said Christine Lullie, general chairman of the festival. "We are really looking forward to it."
Irish culture lovers will revel in all the authentic offerings during this three-day event. Shoppers can peruse the 20 retail vendors, including Irish Sister and Mystic Ireland, for a large selection of jewelry, clothing and keepsakes.
The menu is full of Irish flavor as well. In addition to corned beef, cabbage and treats from Galway Bakers, participants will enjoy American meals such as hot dogs, corn on the cob and barbecue sandwiches. Guinness beer will also be available.
All are welcome to take in the sights and sound of Irish culture on the main stage. Throughout the weekend, numerous acts will show off their heritage. Bands include Mother Grove, Brigid's Cross, Bua, and the Larkin and Moran Brothers, and the stage will also feature performances by the Anam Mor Irish Dancers and member from the Mayer School of Irish Dance.
Children can take part in the Wee Folks area, an air-conditioned indoor stage where little ones can do crafts, play games and learn how to do an Irish jig.
Among the merriment, a special tribute will be held at p.m. Saturday for Doyle Heffron, former director of the Dundee Scots. Former band members will be playing pipes and brass the commemorate the life of a man who touched so many.
"We have people traveling from all over to memorialize Mr. Heffron," said Lullie, who was involved in the Scots as well. A custom piece from Haeger Potteries will be presented to Heffron's family.
Sunday highlights include a Gaelic Mass at 11:30 a.m. and a raffle drawing at 7 p.m., where one lucky winner will receive $10,000.
"If you're going to make it to one of our events this year, this is the one not to miss!" Lullie said.
