Toddler drowns when grandfather faints aboard boat

SILVIS -- Authorities say a 2-year-old boy drowned when his grandfather passed out while the two fished on the Rock River east of Moline.

Rock Island County Coroner Brian Gustafson says Carter Tjarks died after his grandfather suffered an apparent diabetic episode. The boy was gone when the grandfather regained consciousness.

Gustafson says two other fishermen found the child not far down river. He died Friday at a hospital in Silvis.

The boy was from Fairbury, about 30 miles northeast of Bloomington.

Gustafson says the death is under investigation but foul play isn't suspected.
