'Boomerang children' move back with parents
"Boomerang children" are bouncing back to live with their parents by the millions; the U.S. Census Bureau recently reported that 25 percent of adults ages 18 to 34 live with their parents.
"We offer flexible floor plans at all of our communities throughout Chicagoland to allow boomerang children to enjoy the privacy, independence and space they expect as adults, while maintaining the same for the parents" said Jack Wexelberg, regional president of Rolling Meadows-based Kimball Hill Homes.
At White Oak in Hoffman Estates, Kimball Hill offers optional dual master suites in its Regency plan. This 3,516-square-foot plan comes standard with four bedrooms plus den and 2 baths.
For temporary living scenarios like summers home from college, buyers can add an extra in-suite bath to a secondary bedroom, creating a guest suite. One plan that has this option is the Dunlow at Huntington Chase, a single-family home community in Montgomery. Base priced from $269,990, the plan has 2,964-square-feet, four bedrooms and 2 baths.
At Legend Lakes, a master-planned community in McHenry, homebuyers can add a walkout basement to any single-family floor plan per home site. Single-family floor plans range in size from 1,806 to 3,488 square feet, offer three to four bedrooms and 2 to 2 baths, and are base priced from $249,990 to $320,990.
"A finished walkout basement with an added bath can essentially be set up like an apartment for an older child living at home," Wexelberg said.
