Sugar Grove man accused of threatening police

A Sugar Grove man with a history of violent crime was being held today in lieu of $200,000 bond on charges he threatened a police officer.

Edward V. Rylko, 50, warned a Kane County Sheriff's deputy to put on a bulletproof vest and also to get "one for my head," the deputy wrote in a report.

Police say the threat was made while Rylko, of 52 Terry Ave., was being booked on separate charges that he threatened violence against two acquaintances in repeated telephone calls. He ended up being charged with threatening a public official and aggravated intimidation, both felonies, as well as two counts of misdemeanor disorderly conduct, police said.

Sheriff's deputies, along with Sugar Grove officers, confronted Rylko at his home about 6:24 p.m. Tuesday after two Aurora Township residents reported receiving "alarming" calls from Rylko.

According to police, Rylko told one he "was going to pay a couple of (racial epithet) to come over and kick the (expletive) out of him" and the other that his parents' house was "gonna burn."

The complainants each told police they knew Rylko but hadn't been in contact with him in quite some time and had no idea why he would threaten them. They each signed formal complaints, fearing Rylko otherwise would "follow through" on the threats, police said.

When officers arrived at Rylko's house, he reportedly refused to answer the door, forcing an officer to crawl through a window. He denied making any threats, police said.

Once Rylko was handcuffed in the back of a squad car, police said, he began shouting profanities and names toward an officer.

The threats continued during booking, where Rylko told an officer, "You better be wearing your bulletproof vest," the officer wrote, noting the exchange was witnessed by five other police officers.

Court records show Rylko has an extensive criminal history in Kane County, including previous charges of resisting arrest, aggravated battery, assault, robbery and drug possession.

If convicted of threatening a public official, Rylko could be sentenced to between three and seven years in prison. He remained in Kane County jail today, with bond set at $200,000, pending a Friday, Aug. 22., court appearance.
