Alton man pleads guilty in 2007 slaying
A Madison County prosecutor says she will seek a 20-year prison sentence for a 20-year-old Alton man who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy.
Reginald Stegall admitted Friday in court that he was the driver of the SUV which drove by the James Center in Alton, where Scott "Dink" Garner Junior was shot to death in June of last year.
Assistant Madison County State's Attorney Susan Jensen agreed to drop a first-degree murder charge against Stegall in exchange for his guilty plea to second-degree murder.
The gunman, Nathannial Fleming, was convicted last month of first-degree murder.
Authorities say Stegall and Fleming were one day short of graduating from Alton High School when the shooting occurred, and both reportedly had scholarships to attend college.
