Sheriff wrong to blunt criticism
Regarding the story on July 18, 2008, regarding federal authorities' Cook County Jail report lambasting the culture and disastrous atmosphere the Cook County Jail offers inmates. In his indignation toward what the report found of Cook County Jail and its treatment of inmates, Sheriff Tom Dart caresses and licks his tainted reputation by defending his jail and calling the report "unprofessional."
What the report found was exactly what the problem is at that jail and has been a problem for years. The report illustrated the lack of control it has over some abusive, destructive and overzealous corrections officials. These same officials have caused the county millions of dollars due to the lawsuits filed against the jail for very abusive situations between the correction officials and inmates. These inmates won lawsuits against the city of Chicago due to these same officials. We must get rid of the officials and get some serious reforms back at that jail. Tom Dart's indignation toward the report shows me his lack of humility and ignorance and his utter disrespect for the truth when it comes to the Cook County Jail.
