Rings taken from dead Champaign woman's fingers

CHAMPAIGN -- Police in Champaign are looking for someone who stole a pair of gold rings from the hand of a dead woman at her funeral.

Police were called after someone reportedly took the rings from the woman's body last Thursday after a visitation at Owens Funeral home in Champaign.

Police spokeswoman Rene Dunn says the rings were 14-karat gold bands. Combined, they're worth less than $300.

Dunn declined to identify the deceased. But she says the woman's daughter suspects a relative or family friend may have taken the rings, possibly for sentimental reasons.

A message seeking comment from the funeral home hasn't been returned.
