Bail denied for handyman charged in stabbings

A judge has denied bail for an apartment building handyman charged with two counts of attempted murder in the stabbing of two tenants.

Police say 36-year-old Thaddeus Gunnell of Calumet City stabbed a 48-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman in an attempted robbery at their Chicago apartment.

Chicago police say Gunnell demanded money from the woman after entering her home Saturday morning, then stabbed her when she refused. The man was also stabbed after he tried to help.

Authorities allege Gunnell fled with items from the apartment but was arrested short after.

Both victims are in fair and guarded conditions at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

On Sunday a judge denied bail for Gunnell, who also faces two counts of home invasion.

It was unclear Sunday if Gunnell had an attorney.
