Settlement in root canal death

The family of a 46-year-old Chicago school principal who died of cardiac arrest while under sedation for a root canal has been awarded $3.9 million in a settlement.

An attorney for the family of Georgette Watson says a Cook County judge has approved the settlement with two dentists and their private company.

Illinois regulators recently suspended the licenses of the dentists, brothers Joseph and Laurence Feldman.

Investigators found the dentists and their staff gave Watson too much sedation during her December visit and failed to take her medical history, to monitor her adequately and to perform proper emergency CPR.

Watson was principal of Brentano Math and Science Academy in Chicago.
