Glamorama? Radical!
This year's Macy's Glamorama is going to be, like, totally awesome.
Glamo-whatta?
For those who haven't heard of it, Glamorama is the splashy, annual fall fashion show and concert at the Chicago Theatre followed by a rockin' post-show party on the seventh floor of Macy's State Street store.
It's one of Chicago's biggest fashion events of the year, attracting celebrity guests and raising tens of thousands of dollars for the Art Institute of Chicago.
This year's Glamorama, at 8 p.m. Friday, will feature performances by '80s stars MC Hammer and Cyndi Lauper and a fashion show with designers like Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan Collection and Just Cavalli.
The after-party's '80s theme will include a Rubik's Cube Lounge, Donkey Kong arcade competitions and break dancing performances, as well as Pop Rocks, Hubba Bubba bubble gum and Nerds candy.
Sound fun? Go! Tickets are still available, and range in price from $50 to $1,000. You can get them at ticketmaster.com or at the Chicago Theatre box office.
Other entertainment options
Now that the kids are heading back to school, moms can treat themselves to the Girlfriend's Getaway package from the new AVANI Spa, at the Abbey Resort in Lake Geneva, Wis.
For $229 per person, women can enjoy deluxe accommodations at the resort, a 50-minute custom massage, an AVANI manicure and daily admission to the fitness center and all aerobics classes. The only catch? It has to be Sunday through Thursday, and before Oct. 15. For details, see www.theabbeyresort.com.
Bloomies benefit
Next Wednesday, all of the Chicago-area Bloomingdale's stores, including the one in Oakbrook Center, will hold The Shopping Benefit.
From 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., there will be shopping incentives, live entertainment, fashion events, cooking demonstrations and children's events. The fundraiser supports 60 local nonprofit organizations. If you purchase a $10 ticket, the entire amount will be donated to charity and you'll be entitled to 15 to 20 percent off on most of your purchases.
Suburban supermodels
Ursula Dabrowska of Vernon Hills, Kelly Kohmen of Chicago, Noelle Lynch of Mundelein, Josalyn Molina of Downers Grove and Stephanie Ryan of Lake Forest are the five finalists in the "Mario, Make Me a Model" contest. They were chosen from more than 400 entrants in the contest sponsored by Mario Tricoci Hair Salons & Day Spas.
For making it the finals, each girl will receive a makeover from Mario Tricoci, runway instruction by Ford Models, personal training with Equinox Fitness Club and will walk the runway at Millennium Park during Fashion Focus Chicago in October.
The winning model, who will be chosen by a panel of judges Oct. 3, will win prizes that include a five-night trip for two to Mexico from Apple Vacations. All of the finalists also will be considered for modeling contracts with Ford Models.
The public can try to influence the judges by text voting for their favorite, starting next month. See www.mariomakemeamodel.com for details.
