Shop & Share: Aug. 20. Shop & Share slips are available at the Circulation Desk of the Lake Villa District Library, 1001 E. Grand Ave., Lake Villa. When patrons participate in the program at Jewel-Osco Stores Aug. 18-20, five percent of the total purchases, excluding tax, will be donated to the Friends of the Lake Villa District Library.

Blood Drive: 9:30 a.m. to noon, Aug. 20, McHenry Public Library, 809 Front St., McHenry. Heartland Blood Centers' traveling bloodmobile will be parked in the library's parking lot. Residents can make an appointment through the library by calling (815) 385-0036 or stopping by the Circulation Desk. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are preferred. A photo ID is required. Donors must be in good health and feeling well, be at least 17 (or 16 with written approval from a parent or guardian), and 110 pounds or more. It is recommended that donors eat something within the four hours preceding the donation. All donors will be given a coupon for a free quart of Oberweis Ice Cream.

Knee Injury Prevention: 7-8 p.m. Aug. 20, Kits Sports Center, Lake Zurich, 325 Surryse Road, Lake Zurich. Free clinic for coaches, parents and athletes to learn what causes most knee injuries, who is most at risk and what can be done to reduce risks. Food for Fines: Aug. 24-30, Indian Trails Public Library District, 355 S. Schoenbeck Road, Wheeling. For every nonperishable food item donated, $1 will be waived in library fines. Food items must be in good condition, without dents and not in glass containers. This does not apply to fees for lost or damaged library items. Open house public meeting: 4-6 p.m. open house; 6-9 p.m. public meeting Aug. 27, Barrington High School, 616 W. Main St., Barrington. The Surface Transportation Board issued a draft environmental impact statement for the proposed Canadian National Railway acquisition of the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway. Staff from the board and HDR Inc. will be available to answer questions and help members of the public review project maps and other findings of the Draft EIS and analysis. The public meeting will include a short presentation to the public and comments from the public. Speaker registration will be determined on a first come, first served basis by calling (800) 347-0689 to register. Comments are limited to three minutes.

Allendale Association: A not-for-profit children's facility in Lake Villa, looking for qualified volunteers to work directly with children or on other projects. Help a child develop positive relationships with adults, share gardening knowledge in the vocational horticultural center, evaluate a student's Individual Education Plans and meet with the child's therapeutic team, work in the thrift store, or help in other ways.
