Cops defuse standoff at Fox View

Carpentersville police detained three men after gunfire erupted during a two-hour standoff at the Fox View Apartment Complex early Thursday morning.

Police said as many as 21 shots were fired about 2:30 a.m. in an area between the south side of the apartments at 14 Oxford and the west side of the apartments at 7 Oxford.

The shootings left several units damaged with bullets lodged in walls and bullet holes in aluminum siding, police said. No one was injured.

Minutes later, a woman who lives at 7 Oxford called police, saying there was an armed man in her apartment who would not let her or her two children leave.

Officers initially surrounded the apartment, then entered about two hours later, taking three men into custody.

By Thursday afternoon, one had been charged in the incident, one was jailed in connection with two unrelated warrants and one was released, police Sgt. Dean Stiegemeier said.

Leonard Early, 23, of 7 Oxford #13, was charged with three counts of possession of a gun without a firearm owner's identification card, one count of possession of ammunition without a firearm owner's identification card and two counts of possession of a firearm with defaced serial numbers, police said.

Witnesses told officers Early and his girlfriend had domestic issues that may have led to the early morning incident, police said.

Also arrested was Wayman D. Morris, 22, whose last known address was 1932 Bristol Circle, Carpentersville, on warrants for battery and mob action.

Both men are expected to appear in court Friday.

Carpentersville police said the investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible. Witnesses or persons with information about the incident are urged to call Carpentersville police at (847) 551-3481.
