History of Batavia biz

Learn about commerce in Batavia over the past 175 years at a discussion at 2 p.m. today at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave. Besides windmill factories and rock quarries, participants will talk about stores, service industries and other manufacturers of the past. The event is co-sponsored by the Batavia Depot Museum, the Batavia Historical Society and the Batavia Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Jazz fest returns Sept. 5-6

Tickets are on sale for the 11th Annual Kettle Moraine Jazz Festival Sept. 5 and 6 along the upper banks of the Milwaukee River at Riverside Park in West Bend, Wis. The festival features internationally recognized jazz musicians and vocalists, and is expected to draw more than 5,000 fans. The event also includes international cuisine, a marketplace featuring local art and exhibits. Festival hours are 4:30 to 11:30 p.m. Sept. 5, and 1 to 11 p.m. Sept. 6. Spaces for 'Depot Deals'

Spaces are available for the Sept. 8 "Depot Deals" tag sale at the parking lot south of the Metra station on Third Street in Geneva. A 16-by-16-foot space is $50. Vendors keep their proceeds; the rental fee goes to the Geneva Cultural Arts Commission. The CAC will provide advertising and signs. Proceeds support events such as a film festival, "Music in the Alleys," art displays, "Shakespeare in the Park" and snow sculpting. Parking deck party

The Downtown St. Charles Partnership has planned a "deck party" to celebrate the opening of St. Charles' new First Street parking deck. The event will take place on Walnut Street, west of the parking deck, from 2 to 8 p.m. Sept. 14. It will feature local food vendors and merchants, live music, a beer tent and activities for children. Sell kids clothing

The Alice Gustafson School PTO in Batavia is seeking sellers for its Gently Used Children's Clothing and Toy Resale Sept. 19 and 20. The sale features all-season infant through teen clothing, maternity wear, baby equipment and furniture, shoes, uniforms, sporting goods, costumes, books, games, videos and toys.
