C-G, Larkin take tourneys
Cary-Grove senior Nick McDonald believed he could have had hat trick in the opening 8 minutes Saturday.
He only had two, but got his hat trick when the Trojans needed it the most.
McDonald deflected an Elgin clearing attempt, ran down the loose ball and slid a shot low to the right corner past Maroons goalkeeper Osiel Ravadan with 3 minutes remaining in the match to give C-G a 4-3 victory and the championship of the St. Edward tournament.
"I was able to run in front and block (the pass)," McDonald said. "I was one-on-one with the keeper and placed it in the corner."
McDonald scored just 39 seconds in to the match. He ran down a ball from C.J. Arenberg. After a bad touch that went to an Elgin defender, who tried to clear the ball. The ball hit McDonald on the left side and bounced into the net for a 1-0 lead.
Two minutes later, McDonald headed home a long throw-in from Mike Chiodo to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead.
McDonald had two good scoring opportunities in the next 5 minutes, but Ravadan made nice saves to keep the Maroons (2-1) in the game.
"I thought the should have had four in the first (eight) minutes," McDonald said. "Stuff happens."
Elgin cut the deficit in half with 26:15 left in the first half as Raul Hernandez's header off a Jose Quevedo cross beat Trojans goalkeeper Ben Alleva, who finished with 4 saves.
The Trojans (4-0) regained their two-goal advantage 3 1/2 minutes into the second half on a Matt Latawiec goal.
The Maroons didn't get down. They got back within one with 24:42 left on a Omar Jasso goal. Jasso tied the game with 10 minutes left with a free-kick goal that deflected off the bottom of the crossbar before going in.
"We spotted a team that starts 10 seniors two goals. I'm more than happy," Elgin coach Dave Borg said. "To take this lose with a bunch young kids and progress throughout the season, I don't need a first-place trophy. A loss is a loss, but being so young we have to progress."
A tie would have given Cary-Grove the tournament title, but the title was not the reward the Trojans wanted. They pressured the Maroons in the final 10 minutes and McDonald came through with the game-winning goal.
"It's always nice to win a tournament, but we look at every game as a challenge," said Trojans coach Mark Olson, who credited assistant Andre Watson with coming up the adjustments needed to earn this victory. "Every game in itself is a small tournament. That's the approach we take."
