Great timing for sports bar

Could the factors at work be brewing the perfect storm for a sports bar to be opening in another month?

Real Time Sports, a sports bar and grill with a location in Elk Grove, is preparing to open a St. Charles location in October at the site of the former Bud's Sports Field on Randall Road.

This would be perfect timing if local fans were fortunate enough to experience two Chicago baseball teams going deep into the playoffs.

The owners of Real Time Sports must be salivating at the possibilities. But it presents a slight management problem. Unless we have Chicago teams riding high again next year, the revenue picture won't be nearly as high in October 2009.

A strong opening: Any new business would be happy with the kind of reception the reopening of Ray's Evergreen Grille in St. Charles enjoyed the past two weeks.

After five months of renovation work, the historic tavern reopened with what appears to be a popular outdoor patio and bar as the new additions.

The number of cars filling the lot at this West Main Street location tells us that Ray's will enjoy its new era as a restaurant that will appeal to all ages and as a nightspot for those 21 and older.

Lots of ears: How many ears of corn does a corn boil actually boil? Our high schools staged their traditional corn boils to introduce fall sports and dance teams the past week and, in the process, a lot of corn was boiled. But how much? Organizers of the Batavia Corn Boil cooked up all 1,682 ears that were brought to the event in the back of a large Chevy pickup.

To the dinner table: I've often wondered how fast I would have run from the field to the dinner table if I had worked on a farm and my wife was ringing the bell and yelling, "Come and get it!"

Yes, I wonder about strange things.

Though it may not be quite the same, the Moveable Feast in Geneva and the Heritage Prairie farm in Elburn have teamed up to offer outdoor suppers down on the farm.

The topic of the day will be food, farming and anything else that might interest those who attend these educational tours and suppers in the gardens of Heritage Prairie Farm on Brundige Road.

The dinners are held on the third Thursday of the month, through October. The cost is $60 per person for the meal and a walking tour of the farm. Tickets or information are available at Moveable Feast, (630) 845-3287, or Heritage Prairie Market, (630) 443-8253.

Plenty of bounty: Speaking of farms and food, there's no reason to not have a clue about the farmer's markets available throughout the area. The Illinois Farmers' Market has used advertising grant money to build the bountyofkane.org Web site that lists all of the area farmer's markets with locations and times. You've seen stories about these markets in this newspaper, now scope out the Web site to help you hunt them down.
