Abortion rights protest held in downtown Deerfield

Motivated by the leaked Supreme Court majority draft opinion indicating it's possible the landmark 1973 ruling in Roe v. Wade ruling regarding abortion rights could be overturned, 18 protesters held signs and waved while drivers in passing cars honked their horns at Waukegan and Deerfield roads in downtown Deerfield Tuesday evening.

Jenna Gayhart, 19 of Buffalo Grove, inspired by protests that have taken place in Chicago recently, organized the event on social media.

Holding the protest at a busy intersection in Deerfield afforded the opportunity to reach more people, she said.

"I decided to create a protest because I saw everything that was going on in Chicago and I wanted to get the town involved," Gayhart said. "I hope they see our signs. Hopefully they learn to get involved."
