The event is scheduled from 6 to 10 pm. Aug. 21 at the Elgin VFW Hall, 1601 Weld Road. A donation of $30 per person or $40 for a family is requested. For details, call (630) 897-4330.
Roads closed in Algonquin
Church Street, Kathleen Avenue, Michael Avenue and Elizabeth Street will be closed through Thursday while the McHenry County Department of Transportation paves the roads. This is being done as the second part of the county's lane-expansion project between Lakewood Road and Route 47, which will grow from two lanes to four.
U-46 taxpayers, mark your calendars
Elgin Area School District U-46 will place its tentative 2009 budget on public display until Sept. 8 at the Educational Services Center, 355 E. Chicago St., Elgin. A public hearing on the budget will take place at 7 p.m. Sept. 8.
New physical requirements
Illinois law changes student physical requirements for the upcoming school year. Now, all children entering kindergarten should have an eye examination performed by a licensed physician or an optometrist within one year of Oct. 15. School districts are required to waive the eye examination requirement for low-income families with children who receive free and reduced-price lunches and are eligible for public assistance such as Medicaid or All Kids state health insurance. Students entering sixth grade this school year who got physicals between August 2006 and last September do not need to get another exam. Incoming fifth-graders also will not need to submit proof of a physical to school officials. Those fifth-graders will need a physical before entering sixth grade in 2009-10.
