One hurt in South Elgin house fire

A candle sparked a fire in a two-story South Elgin home Tuesday, causing $90,000 damage and sending the homeowner to the hospital, officials said.

South Elgin firefighters were called at 1 p.m. to 774 Chasewood Drive in the village's west-side Thornwood subdivision.

Lt. Todd Erickson said the 42-year-old homeowner lit a candle before she took a nap in her master bedroom.

"She woke up to find out the bedroom was on fire," Erickson said.

The woman escaped the house and was taken to Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin for smoke inhalation. Her condition, or whether she was treated and released, was not immediately available. But Erickson said the woman's injuries were not life threatening.

Erickson said the fire was contained to the bedroom and extinguished in about 15 minutes. However, smoke damage has rendered the house uninhabitable for now, he added.

Crews from Pingree Grove also assisted in combating the fire.
