Chicago police officer shot

Police in Chicago are investigating a shooting on the city's West Side that left a woman dead and an off-duty Chicago police detective critically wounded.

Police spokeswoman Officer Amina Greer says police responding to a report of a shooting found the victims in a sport-utility vehicle. Both had been shot several times in what authorities say may have been an attempted robbery.

Greer says the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Cook County medical examiner's office identified her as Katheryn Romberg.

The detective, a 23-year veteran of the department, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.

Greer says authorities didn't immediately know the relationship between the two victims. Police aren't releasing the detective's name.
