Legion commander appreciates support
As I complete my tour of duty as Commander of American Legion Post 680, I look back with several emotions.
I feel confidence as I hand the reins to new Commander Chuck Stein that he will continue the rich heritage of the American Legion and of all the post commanders who have gone before him.
I feel pride and satisfaction that the last two years have been marked by many successes.
Finally, I feel gratitude. Gratitude to the Hampshire-Burlington Community, which has always generously supported us. Gratitude to this great nation, with its long history of Constitutional Democracy. And last, but not least, gratitude to my comrades who have made these last two years such a pleasant and rewarding experience.
From saying farewell to a fallen comrade, to presenting the flag at a school event, to parading the colors at athletic events, a few phone calls is all it would take to turn out a troop of willing and dedicated veterans.
General MacArthur said, "Old soldiers never die, they just fade away," but even as I finish my tour as post commander, I do not plan to do either. I will continue my service to God and Country as I assume my new duties as junior vice commander for the Kane County American Legion.
So once again I say thanks to all and God bless America.
