S. Elgin police arrest two for SUV theft
Two men stole an SUV being watched by South Elgin officers at 7 p.m. Thursday in a church parking lot, police said.
Two men ran to the truck, got in and sped away, but they were stopped a few blocks away at Fulton and South streets, police said.
James E. Gutierrez, 24, of 317 Park Ave., Elgin and Silvestre J. Rodriguez, 17, of 54 Trenton Ave., South Elgin, were each charged with two counts of felony possession of a stolen vehicle, police said.
If convicted, the men could each spend six and 14 years in prison.
The sport utility vehicle, reported stolen by a South Elgin man, had been located and police were hoping to catch the theives.
Bonds were set at $5,000 for Gutierrez and $5,000 for Rodriguez. They are being held in the Kane County jail with Aug. 15 court dates at the Kane County Judicial Center.
