Anderson Animal Shelter launches program

Anderson Animal Shelter has unleashed its 2008-09 Kids & Kritters Program. Kids & Kritters sessions are two-hour interactive animal encounters where participants, age 9 to 12, will learn about animals, engage in hands-on activities with shelter residents and have fun.

Each month a new topic will be explored. The cost is $5 per session.

Sessions are held from 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays and 4 to 6 p.m. Thursdays.

Registration is limited and taken on a first-come, first-served basis one month prior. Register by emailing afriedman@andersonanimalshelter.org or calling (847) 697-2880, ext.*51.

September: "So You Want to Work with Animals?!" Ever wondered about all of the animal related jobs out there, and how to pursue a job with animals in the future? Then this is the session for you. Many know about veterinarians, but what about zoo keepers, humane educators, dog trainers, and other exciting animal related jobs? During this session, you will see what "a day in the life of" each of these animal loving individuals looks like.

October: "Scary Animal Myths" With a Halloween theme, they will discuss various animal myths, their origins, and truths. For example, is it fact or fiction that the common wood frog can literally freeze when the temperature drops and thaw when it gets warmer? Are black cats really bad luck? Is there a type of dog that can track a scent for 100 miles? Learn all this and more at spooky session.

November: "Creature Cuisine! Pet Nutrition" Pets need a healthy diet just like you do. Learn what foods are safe and which are dangerous for pets. Additionally, you will learn about different types of diets and what food your pets should be eating based on their age. With brand new recipes, you also will put on your chef hat to make dog and cat treats for the shelter animals.

December: "Holiday Toy Workshop" In this session, you will put our creative talents to work being elves for our furry friends in the shelter. Pets enjoy toys just like you do. Toys help them unleash energy and relieve boredom. In the "workshop" the group will make pom-pom cat gloves and recycled dog rope toys.

January: "Happy New Year! Resolutions for You and Your Pet" Now that it's 2009 it's time to make some animal related resolutions. Commit to doing an excellent job of walking, loving, grooming and pampering your pets. During this session, you will learn specifics of grooming, agility and even animal massage.

February: "Making a Difference in Your Community" During this session, you will learn all about being an animal ambassador in your community. You will learn a variety of different (and appropriate) ways to educate people about animal welfare issues. Participants will also write a letter as a group regarding a mutually decided upon animal issue.
