Second teen charged in Elgin stabbing

A second Elgin teenager has been arrested in the July 25 stabbing of a 22-year-old homeless man in Elgin's Chicago Street Metra parking lot.

Cory J. Hunter, 17, of 1196 Leawood Drive, Elgin, was charged in court Wednesday with aggravated battery with great bodily harm, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated battery on a public way, police said.

The victim walked out of JJ Peppers, 10 S. State St., at 12:27 p.m. on July 25 when three men confronted him outside the store about the $100 he had been given to purchase cigarettes.

The victim ran across Route 31, where he was stabbed in the back with the three-foot metal pole that held the key to the bathroom of JJ Peppers.

The victim had forgotten to return the bathroom key.

A surgeon at Sherman Hospital closed the three-inch by four-inch gash in his back with stitches, and the victim was released.

Elgin police said the victim positively identified Hunter as one of the three people who chased and threw him to the ground and then punched, kicked and stabbed him.

Arlan J. Stone, 17, of 510 W. Highland Ave., Elgin, was arrested on July 28 and charged with the same three offenses.

Police say the 22-year-old victim of the stabbing continues to be harassed, possibly for identifying his attackers.

He was confronted by two other teens again at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday near the Grand Victoria Casino, police said, and was placed in the custody of a police squad car.

Jeremy G. Stokes, 18 and Deshawn R. Gomez, both of 208 Crystal Ave., Elgin, were each charged with unlawful communication with a witness, police said.

Stokes also was charged with aggravated battery to the victim, police said.

They were unable to post $10,000 and $5,000 bonds and were taken to the Kane County jail to await Aug. 28 and 29 court dates at the Kane County Judicial Center.
