Sailor from Great Lakes killed in Afghanistan
A sailor with suburban ties was killed last week in Afghanistan, the Defense Department announced.
Petty Officer Second Class Anthony M. Carbullido, of Guam, died Aug. 8 in Sangatesh, Afghanistan, from injuries suffered when his convoy vehicle struck an improvised explosive device, the Defense Department said.
Carbullido, 25, was a corpsman assigned to the Naval Hospital Corps School at the Great Lakes Naval Center near North Chicago.
U.S. Rep. Madelein Z. Bordallo, the delegate from Guam, expressed sympathies for Carbullido's friends and family.
"Petty Officer Carbullido was a hero who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom," Bordallo said in an e-mailed statement. "We share the burden of his loss with his family and we pray that they will be comforted in knowing that our island community will always remember and honor Anthony for his service."
At the request of Carbullido's widow, Great Lakes officials are not releasing any information about him or his military service.
