Getz intrigues his new manager

The mixing and matching of the White Sox continued Sunday.

A day after losing starting pitcher Jose Contreras for the season and beyond with a ruptured left Achilles' tendon and acquiring reliever Horacio Ramirez from Kansas City, the Sox demoted struggling reliever Boone Logan and third baseman Josh Fields to Class AAA Charlotte and brought up right-handed pitcher Lance Broadway and infielder Chris Getz.

Of the two new Charlotte arrivals, manager Ozzie Guillen seemed most intrigued with Getz, a second baseman who has been used all over the infield and outfield this season. Guillen plans to use him solely as an infielder.

"This kid has a chance to be here for a few years," Guillen said. "I like the way he plays; I like the way he does stuff, and so do the minor-league people. The coaches out there really like him, and hopefully he can help with what we need."

"Going into the year I mainly just played second base. I think at spring training (director of minor-league instruction) Buddy Bell told me, 'We're going to move you around,' " Getz said. "And once we got down there and our season started, they started inching me into playing short and then later some outfield and lately third base.

"So I'm happy it's kind of gotten my foot in the door. That's all you can really ask for."

While the new guys were getting adjusted to their surroundings, thoughts of Contreras still were on the Sox' minds.

"I'll tell you what, man, it's a terrible feeling," Guillen said. "It's real bad because Jose is an unbelievable guy, and unbelievable pro, and his injury is not an easy one."

"It's a big miss for us losing Contreras, but we have to keep going, step up and do what we have to do with what we have here," reliever Octavio Dotel said. "If we start thinking about Jose and what is going to happen, then probably we don't come through.

"It's a business, so we have to think about what we have to do for this team, our fans and this city."
