Briefs: History of Batavia biz

Learn about the history of commerce in Batavia over the past 175 years, at a discussion at 2 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave. Besides windmill factories and rock quarries, participants will talk about stores, service industries and other manufacturers of the past. Co-sponsored by the Batavia Depot Museum, the Batavia Historical Society and the Batavia Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

ECC sets small business class:

Elgin Community College, the Small Business Administration and the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity will host a Starting Your Business in Illinois workshop at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. During the workshop, participants can learn about the importance of creating feasibility studies and business plans, about financing options and where to get additional assistance. The workshop will be held in room 103 of the Fox Valley University and Business Center on ECC's main campus, 1700 Spartan Drive., Elgin. Cost is $25 per person. Call (847) 214-7488.

Township brush pickup:

St. Charles Township brush pickup dates is Monday. Unincorporated St. Charles residents should call the township road district office at (630) 584-3496 the Friday before each pickup and leave their address if they have brush to be picked up.

Campton farmers market:

Fresh fruits, vegetables and meats are among the locally produced goods on sale each week at the Campton Hills Farmers Market. The markets take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays through Sept. 27 at Campton Crossings shopping center along Route 64. Call (630) 584-5700.

Resident registration begins:

Residents of the Fox Valley Park District can register for fall programs beginning today at 8:30 a.m. Registration is aon a first-come, first-served basis and must include payment. Send checks payable to Fox Valley Park District to FVPD, 712 S. River St., Aurora, IL 60506. Internet and touchtone phone registration is also available. Big Truck Show

The St. Charles Park District's 3rd Annual Big Truck Show is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon today, at Langum Park, south of East Main Street between Riverside and Seventh avenues. Geared toward children, the show includes garbage trucks, front-end loaders, tractors, police cars and fire trucks, among others.
