55 dogs seized after puppy mill raid

ARTHUR -- Douglas County authorities say they've raided an unlicensed puppy mill and seized 55 dogs they say were living in deplorable conditions.

County Animal Control Administrator Kathleen McManamon says many of the animals found Friday in rural Arthur were covered with urine and feces and had sores on their feet from wire cages. Many also lacked food or water.

She says the property owners were not arrested but the case is being referred to the Douglas County State's Attorney's office to determine if charges should be filed.

The raid followed a tip to the Humane Society of the United States. McManamon says a Macon County animal control officer inspected the farm where the animals were being kept this week and confirmed the tip was true.
