50th anniversary adds to annual Buffalo Grove Days
A year of 50th anniversary celebrations ends for Buffalo Grove with its annual Labor Day weekend festival.
Buffalo Grove Days, which runs from Thursday through Monday, will include several events tailored to the 50th anniversary, including the dedication of a time capsule.
The capsule has already been buried near village hall, and the anniversary committee will dedicate it at 2:30 p.m. Monday.
Residents have been donating items for the capsule all year; it will be reopened in 25 years.
"Things came from schools from the area, photographs from local families," said Paulette Greenberg, co-chair of the festival. "The village put in newspapers, a history book, calendar."
Residents have also been signing scrolls at events throughout the year, which were also put into the capsule.
Some of the entertainment will also be 1950s-oriented, including an Elvis impersonator.
The theme is also carried out in the parade, which will include a float with the Weidner family, one of the original inhabitants of the town.
The festival will also include the staples that residents have come to look forward to, such as the BBQ and Dessert Challenges and food and beer tents.
The event will be kicked off with Bingo, sponsored by the Rotary Club, on Thursday night. Carnival rides will also open up that day.
"There's a brand new ride at the carnival," Greenberg said. "It'll definitely turn your stomach."
Wristbands for carnival ride specials are available for Thursday and Monday. The bands are worth unlimited rides for $20 each day.
The Buddy Baseball team will also have a game at its own Kendrigan Field at 4 p.m. Sunday. The field was built by the park district especially to accommodate wheelchairs.
Shuttle buses are also available throughout the festival to make parking easier. A bus will loop from the Town Center on Lake-Cook Road, and another one will come down Dundee Road.
