Thief talks way inside Arlington Hts. apartment

A man stole $3,000 out of an Arlington Heights apartment on the 2200 block of South Goebbert Road by pretending he was inspecting for possible flooding, police said.

Police said the resident was sitting on his balcony Aug. 8 when a man walked up and said he needed to check the apartment inside for potential flooding problems. The resident let the man inside and together they checked the bathroom; then the "inspector" asked him to stay in the bathroom while he checked the kitchen sink.

Ten minutes later he came back and told the resident he was leaving. Later the victim discovered the money missing from a pocket of his coat in the closet, police said.
