Elgin man convicted in home invasion

An Elgin man was convicted Monday of using a metal curtain rod to break into a woman's apartment and attack her over a $10 debt.

Tyrone R. Washington, 34, of the 400 block of East Chicago Street, waived his right to a jury trial and was convicted of home invasion by Kane County Judge Grant S. Wegner. Washington faces up to 60 years in prison.

Washington was angry over a $10 debt when, on March 6, he used a metal curtain rod to smash out a door window at a ground-level apartment, prosecutors said. He then reached through to open the door and allegedly attacked a woman inside, causing wounds to her forearms and back.

Washington faces an extended prison sentence of up to 60 years because of a prior conviction of aggravated battery with a firearm, prosecutors said. Sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 19.
