Teen drowns in Waukegan pool

A 17-year-old boy died in an aparent drowning Wednesday at an apartment complex swimming pool in Waukegan.

Lake County Coroner Richard Keller identified the victim as Darius Smith of North Chicago. Keller said the teen had been swimming at an apartment facility pool near Glen Flora and McCaree avenues when he went under water for an extended period.

"Apparently, he was just having some fun in the pool - swimming, jumping, diving and whatnot - and seemed to get into some trouble when he was swimming in the deep end," Keller said.

Bystanders helped pull Smith from the pool, Keller said, and the teenager was taken to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan, where he was pronounced dead at 5:50 p.m. An autopsy is scheduled for today. Waukegan police were not releasing additional information Wednesday night.
