Man jumps into river to evade police

It was a quick dip Friday morning for a Carpentersville man who jumped into the Fox River in an attempt to evade police after a traffic stop.

Marlon Coleman, 25, of 3 Middlesex Drive, was stopped just after 9:30 a.m. in front of his home at for an unspecified equipment violation, Carpentersville police Cmdr. Michael Kilbourne said.

A background check showed Coleman was wanted on a warrant for robbery, Kilbourne said.

However, before police could arrest him, Coleman ran west through a wooded area toward the Fox River, Kilbourne said.

Coleman entered the water about a half mile north of the Fox River boat launch at Williams Road, where Kilbourne said fire department rescue boats were standing by.

"He did go into the river and our officers were there when he jumped in," said Kilbourne, who said Coleman was out of the water at 10:17 a.m. "I don't know if our officers pulled him out of the river or if he got out on his own. But it did not involve police going in and catching him."

Kilbourne said fire department rescue boats were requested but were not launched into the river.
