Harper to celebrate international education

Harper College is going around the world in just four days - offering the public an international bazaar of Mexican mariachi bands, German and Turkish food, Middle Eastern dancing and a slew of discussions on everything from the ways Arabs are portrayed in popular films to Khmer culture and the Incan Empire.

The college's annual International Education Celebration runs from Monday, Nov. 17, to Thursday, Nov. 20, across campus. The festivities, aimed at increasing suburbanites' knowledge of other cultures and world issues in an election year, are free and open to all.

"We want to amp up global awareness on many different levels - educationally, culturally, socially," says Jacquelyn Mott, a member of the international committee that is sponsoring the events.

Among the offerings will be a showing of the award-winning short film "Kemo Sabe" and a conversation with its director at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, room A243; a look at how Arabs have been portrayed in Hollywood at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, room E107; a reflection on Amnesty International's accomplishments in the field of human rights at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, room A243; a deaf culture panel at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, room J143; and a lighthearted investigation of how the art of humor varies around the world at 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, room A243.
