Honor the past, celebrate the future

I encourage all Americans to remember what Independence Day truly means, to recognize the sacrifices of those serving in the military and to celebrate safely and responsibly.

As you gather with your friends and family, remember the actions of our Founding Fathers so many years ago as well as the sacrifices of our courageous military men and women that make this celebration possible.

I would also like to remind everyone how important it is to celebrate responsibly.

According to the Illinois chapter of the American Red Cross, each year approximately 10,000 people are treated in emergency rooms nationwide for injuries sustained from firework accidents, roughly 50 percent of victims being younger than 15 years old.

I ask for your help in ensuring their safety, not just this Independence Day, but every day. It is essential all Illinois citizens work together to preserve the values that make our state great.

I hope you will join me in making this July 4th a memorable one by showing your appreciation for all of our troops, past and present.

Proudly display your American flag and enjoy the festivities responsibly.

This is a time for honoring the past as well as celebrating the future.
