Not guilty plea
A Gurnee man charged with selling drugs to an undercover police officer three times pleaded not guilty Thursday in Lake County Circuit Court. Luis Lara, 26, of 4347 McClure Dr., Apt. 8, was arrested May 30 when he sold an agent of the Lake County Metropolitan Enforcement Group an ounce of cocaine for $2,200, Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Scott Hoffert said. Hoffert said Lara is accused of selling the same officer 8.5 grams of cocaine May 19, and 3.7 grams May 14. Circuit Judge Fred Foreman told Lara he faces a mandatory prison sentence of six to 30 years if convicted, and scheduled a trial for Sept. 8. Lara, who is held on $1.5 million bond, is due to appear in court Aug. 26.
